Functionally, glutathione supports redox balance by donating electrons and becoming oxidized. It also serves as a cofactor for enzymes such as glutathione peroxidases and glutathione S-transferases. These enzymes participate in peroxide reduction and in conjugation reactions that help process reactive molecules. Separate from antioxidant roles, glutathione can modify protein cysteines through S-glutathionylation, influencing enzyme activity and signaling. Research continues to examine how these chemical roles translate into whole-organism effects.
Glutathione is a tripeptide composed of glutamate, cysteine, and glycine. Its glutamate-cysteine linkage uses the gamma-carboxyl group of glutamate, a feature that resists standard peptidases. The cysteine residue provides a thiol group, which gives the molecule its reducing character. In cells, glutathione is often the most abundant small-molecule thiol, with concentrations varying widely by tissue and compartment. It exists mainly in a reduced form called GSH, while oxidation produces a disulfide-linked dimer called GSSG.
Glutathione is present in most tissues, with especially high concentrations in the liver. It also serves as a cofactor for some enzymes and helps transport amino acids across cell membranes. In plants and microorganisms, glutathione contributes to stress responses and metal handling. The molecule is synthesized in two ATP-dependent steps, first producing gamma-glutamylcysteine and then adding glycine. Because cysteine availability often limits synthesis, dietary and metabolic factors can influence glutathione levels. Research continues to examine how these levels relate to health and disease.
Glutathione is a tripeptide composed of glutamate, cysteine, and glycine. The peptide bond between glutamate and cysteine uses the gamma-carboxyl group of glutamate rather than the alpha-carboxyl group. This unusual linkage protects the molecule from many common peptidases. The cysteine side chain carries a thiol group that can undergo reversible oxidation. Because of this thiol, glutathione participates in redox reactions and helps maintain the reducing environment inside most cells in living systems.

Synthesis occurs in two ATP-dependent steps: glutamate-cysteine ligase joins glutamate and cysteine to form gamma-glutamylcysteine, and glutathione synthetase adds glycine to complete the tripeptide. The pathway is feedback-inhibited by GSH and limited by cysteine availability, so cysteine supply often constrains production. Once formed, GSH participates in redox buffering, xenobiotic conjugation, and protein glutathionylation. Glutathione peroxidase uses GSH to reduce hydrogen peroxide and lipid peroxides, yielding GSSG, while glutathione reductase regenerates GSH using NADPH. Glutathione S-transferases conjugate electrophiles to GSH, supporting detoxification and excretion.
Because GSH is central to redox balance, its status is studied in aging, liver disease, neurodegenerative conditions, and metabolic disorders. Observational studies often report lower GSH or higher GSSG in affected tissues, but such associations do not establish that raising glutathione changes disease outcomes. Oral glutathione is digested into amino acids, and whether intact absorption occurs remains debated; precursors such as N-acetylcysteine and cysteine donors are also investigated. Regulatory agencies generally treat glutathione as a dietary supplement, not an approved drug, and clinical claims require evidence from controlled trials.
Glutathione is a small tripeptide composed of glutamate, cysteine, and glycine, with the unusual gamma-glutamyl linkage between glutamate and cysteine. Its cysteine thiol group makes it a major non-enzymatic antioxidant in cells. The reduced form, GSH, predominates in most intracellular compartments, while the oxidized disulfide form, GSSG, is produced when GSH reduces reactive oxygen species. Intracellular concentrations often reach millimolar levels, whereas plasma concentrations are much lower, typically in the low micromolar range. This gradient reflects active synthesis, transport, and consumption rather than passive distribution.
Synthesis occurs in two ATP-dependent steps. The enzyme glutamate-cysteine ligase joins glutamate and cysteine to form gamma-glutamylcysteine, and glutathione synthetase adds glycine. The first step is rate-limiting and is influenced by cysteine availability and feedback inhibition by GSH. Breakdown involves gamma-glutamyl transferase and subsequent peptidases, which release constituent amino acids for reuse. Because turnover differs among tissues, measurements from blood, plasma, and tissues are not directly interchangeable. Research continues to clarify how compartment-specific pools are regulated in health and disease.
Glutathione is a tripeptide composed of glutamate, cysteine, and glycine. It contains an unusual gamma-glutamyl bond between glutamate and cysteine, which resists cleavage by many peptidases. The reduced form, GSH, carries a thiol group on cysteine and is the dominant intracellular form in most cells. Its structure allows it to participate in redox reactions and to serve as a sulfur donor. The oxidized form, GSSG, consists of two GSH molecules joined by a disulfide bond.
Several analytical methods can quantify glutathione, including high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) with UV or fluorescence detection for separating GSH and GSSG. Liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) offers higher specificity and sensitivity, often detecting nanomolar concentrations. The enzymatic recycling assay, often called the Tietze method, measures total glutathione by coupling reduction of GSSG to a colorimetric or fluorometric readout. Capillary electrophoresis and electrochemical detection are also used in specialized laboratories. Each method has distinct advantages and limitations regarding throughput, cost, and susceptibility to interference.
Interpreting glutathione measurements requires attention to pre-analytical variables. The GSSG concentration in a sample can rise artificially during storage or processing, making the GSH/GSSG ratio unreliable if not controlled. Reference ranges vary by specimen type, assay, and population, so comparisons across studies are difficult. Plasma glutathione is low and sensitive to hemolysis, while whole blood reflects primarily erythrocyte content. Many studies measure total glutathione rather than the reduced and oxidized forms separately, which limits conclusions about redox status.
The first of these incursions occurred when a fleet of these Crusaders was invited by the Portuguese king Afonso I Henriques to conquer the city of Lisbon in 1142. Although this Siege of Lisbon (1142) was a failure it created a precedent for their involvement in Portugal. So in 1147 when another group of Norman and other groups of crusaders from Northern Europe arrived in Porto on their way to join the crusading forces of the Second Crusade, the Bishop of Porto and later Afonso Henriques according to De expugnatione Lyxbonensi convinced them to help with the siege of Lisbon. This time the city was captured and according to the arrangement agreed upon with the Portuguese monarch many of them settled in the newly sacked city. The following year the remainder of the crusading fleet, including a substantial number of Anglo-Normans, was invited by the count of Barcelona, Ramon Berenguer IV, to participate in the siege of Tortosa (1148). Again the Normans were rewarded with lands in the newly conquered frontier city.
Hydrogen selenide is an extremely toxic, corrosive gas. Selenium also occurs in organic compounds, such as dimethyl selenide, selenomethionine, selenocysteine and methylselenocysteine, all of which have high bioavailability and are toxic in large doses. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has set the legal limit (permissible exposure limit) for selenium in the workplace at 0.2 mg/m3 over an 8-hour workday. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has set a Recommended exposure limit (REL) of 0.2 mg/m3 over an 8-hour workday. At levels of 1 mg/m3, selenium is immediately dangerous to life and health.
== Pharmacology == Pimecrolimus is an ascomycin macrolactam derivative. It has been shown in vitro that pimecrolimus binds to FKBP1A and also inhibits calcineurin. Thus pimecrolimus inhibits T-cell activation by inhibiting the synthesis and release of cytokines from T-cells. Pimecrolimus also prevents the release of inflammatory cytokines and mediators from mast cells. Pimecrolimus, like tacrolimus, belongs to the ascomycin class of macrolactam immunosuppressives, acting by the inhibition of T-cell activation by the calcineurin pathway and inhibition of the release of numerous inflammatory cytokines, thereby preventing the cascade of immune and inflammatory signals. Pimecrolimus has a similar mode of action to that of tacrolimus but is more selective, with no effect on dendritic (Langerhans) cells. It has lower permeation through the skin than topical steroids or topical tacrolimus although they have not been compared with each other for their permeation ability through mucosa. In addition, in contrast with topical steroids, pimecrolimus does not produce skin atrophy.
However, it was found that the timers controlling the broadcasts could drift and the broadcasts from one station would begin to be seen at others, a phenomenon known as "running rabbits". To avoid this, power from the National Grid was used to provide a convenient phase-locked 50 Hz signal that was available across the entire nation. Each CH station was equipped with a phase-shifting transformer that triggered it at a different point on the grid waveform. The output of the transformer was fed to a Dippy oscillator that produced sharp pulses at 25 Hz, phase-locked to the output from the transformer. The locking was "soft", so short-term variations in the phase or frequency of the grid were filtered out. During times of strong ionospheric reflection, especially at night, it was possible that the receiver would see reflections from the ground after one reflection. To address this problem, the system was later provided with a second pulse repetition frequency at 12.5 pps, which meant that a reflection would have to be from further than 6,000 miles (9,700 km) away before it would be seen during the next reception period.
=== Space colonies === I've done some historical research on the costs of the Mayflower's voyage, and on the Mormons' emigration to Utah, and I think it's possible to go into space on a much smaller scale. A cost on the order of $40,000 per person [1978 dollars, $181,600 in 2022 dollars] would be the target to shoot for; in terms of real wages, that would make it comparable to the colonization of America. Unless it's brought down to that level it's not really interesting to me, because otherwise, it would be a luxury that only governments could afford. Dyson was interested in space travel since he was a child, reading such science fiction classics as Olaf Stapledon's Star Maker. As a young man, he worked for General Atomics on the nuclear-powered Orion spacecraft. He hoped Project Orion would put men on Mars by 1965, and Saturn by 1970. For a quarter-century, Dyson was unhappy about how the government conducted space travel:

=== Type 2 diabetes === Research focused on non insulin dependent diabetes encompasses many areas of interest. Degeneration of the beta cell as diabetes progresses has been a broadly reviewed topic. Another topic of interest for beta-cell physiologists is the mechanism of insulin pulsatility which has been well investigated. Many genome studies have been completed and are advancing the knowledge of beta-cell function exponentially. Indeed, the area of beta-cell research is very active yet many mysteries remain.
There are several different mating systems among teleosts. Some species are promiscuous, where both males and females breed with multiple partners and there are no obvious mate choices. This has been recorded in Baltic herring, Guppies, Nassau groupers, humbug damselfish, cichlids and creole wrasses. Polygamy, where one sex has multiple partners can come in many forms. Polyandry consists of one adult female breeding with multiple males, which only breed with that female. This is rare among teleosts, and fish in general, but is found in the clownfish. In addition, it may also exist to an extent among anglerfish, where some females have more than one male attached to them. Polygyny, where one male breeds with multiple females, is much more common. This is recorded in Sculpins, sunfish, darters, damselfish and cichlids where multiple females may visit a territorial male that guards and takes care of eggs and young. Polygyny may also involve a male guarding a harem of several females. This occurs in coral reef species, such as damselfishes, wrasses, parrotfishes, surgeonfishes, triggerfishes and tilefishes. Lek breeding, where males congregate to display to females, has been recorded in at least one species Cyrtocara eucinostomus. Lek-like breeding systems have also been recorded in several other species. In monogamous species, males and females may form pair bonds and breed exclusively with their partners. This occurs in North American freshwater catfishes, many butterflyfishes, sea horses and several other species.
Diabulimia (a portmanteau of diabetes and bulimia), also known as ED-DMT1 (eating disorder-diabetes mellitus type 1) in the US or T1ED (type 1 eating disorder) in the UK, is an eating disorder in which people with type 1 diabetes deliberately give themselves less insulin than they need or stop taking it altogether for the purpose of weight loss. Diabulimia is not recognized as a formal psychiatric diagnosis in the DSM-5. Because of this, some in the medical or psychiatric communities use the phrases "disturbed eating behavior" or "disordered eating behavior" (DEB in both cases) and disordered eating (DE) are quite common in medical and psychiatric literature addressing patients who have type 1 diabetes and manipulate insulin doses to control weight along with exhibiting bulimic behavior. Diabulimia is caused by a range of factors relating to body image, the regular use of insulin, and emotional well-being. Insulin can cause weight gain, and a person who restricts insulin may lose weight. Insulin restriction can lead to the common symptoms of uncontrolled hyperglycemia, which risks complications and a shorter life expectancy. Treatment involves cognitive behavioral therapy, and other support services offered by a multidisciplinary team who work both in diabetes medicine and on eating disorders. Diabulimia is most common in young people, and most of the severe cases tend to occur in women. Research into effective management strategies is ongoing, with a growing medical consensus on the importance of early intervention with specialist teams.
Former Essendon vice-captain Mark McVeigh was similarly forthright in his praise, claiming Robinson's knowledge of the club's fitness program was "squeaky clean". "I can honestly tell you that everything I took I knew 100 per cent that it was within the WADA and AFL doping regulations," McVeigh continued, affirming his belief that Robinson had done nothing wrong. Following his sacking Robinson began a legal campaign against the club, on the grounds of unfair dismissal. On Thursday 2 October, Essendon reached a $1 million settlement with Robinson to end his unfair dismissal claim. A trial had previously been set for 10 November and several high profile figures, such as Andrew Demetriou and Gillon McLachlan, were expected to testify. In court documents Robinson claimed that an Essendon public relations strategy had been formulated to portray himself and Stephen Dank as "rogue operators" during their tenure.

nebeprisikiškiakopūstlapiaujančiuosiuose – "in those, of masculine gender, who aren't gathering enough wood sorrel's leaves by themselves anymore." – the plural locative case of past iterative active participle of verb kiškiakopūstlapiauti meaning "to pick wood-sorrels' leaves" (leaves of edible forest plant with sour taste, word by word translation "rabbit cabbage"). The word is attributed to software developer / writer Andrius Stašauskas.
=== Reactions === The draft proclamation emerged amid increasing allegations of forced recruitment and heightened political tensions following the TPLF's reactivation of the pre-war regional council. Human rights organizations and opposition actors called for independent investigations into recruitment practices and urged authorities to comply with human rights standards and the provisions of the Pretoria Agreement.
== History == Shiyi xinjian (食醫心鑑), a mid-9th-century Chinese document, recorded the Korean pepper paste as 苦椒醬 (pinyin: kǔ jiāo jiàng, lit. 'pepper paste'). The second-oldest documentation of pepper paste is found in the 1433 Korean book Collected Prescriptions of Native Korean Medicines. Pepper paste is again mentioned in a 1445 medical encyclopedia named Compendia of Medical Prescriptions. However, all these sources are from the time before the actual chili peppers were introduced to Korea. Chili peppers, which originated in the Americas, were introduced to East Asia by Portuguese traders in the early 16th century. There is mention of a type of chili pepper brought to Korea found in Collected Essays of Jibong, an encyclopedia published in 1614. Farm Management, a book from c. 1700, discussed the cultivation methods of chili peppers.
==== As plaintiff ==== Monster Beverage Corporation has been criticized for its policy of indiscriminately suing companies and/or brands that use the word monster, the letter M, or the word beast in their marketing for trademark infringement, despite such trademarks being generally dissimilar or distinguishable from Monster's. The words monster and beast have existed in the English language since the 13th century, with the Latin letter M tracing back to the 7th century BC. By 2019, the company has initiated over a thousand trademark cases that have been reviewed by the US court system or US Patent and Trademark Office's (USPTO) Trademark Trial and Appeal Board, making them a poster child for "trademark bullying" which the USPTO defines as "a trademark owner that uses its trademark rights to harass and intimidate another business beyond what the law might be reasonably interpreted to allow." Examples of such lawsuits include the 2009 ones against Bevreview.com, a beverage review site that published an unfavorable review of the Monster Energy drink, Rock Art Brewery from Vermont that marketed a beer named "Vermonster", and the aquarium hobbyist site MonsterFishKeepers.com in 2012. The "Vermonster" case was even brought up by Senator Patrick Leahy in a study of problematic trademark litigation tactics. Monster Beverage dropped the lawsuit against the microbrewery due to the adverse publicity the lawsuit generated. In a four year case from 2015 to 2019, Monster sued Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment (MLSE), the parent of the Toronto Raptors, and the NBA.
At this point, a fully working vaccine has not been created, and it is therefore decided that the best thing for the Syndicate to do is to comply with the original deal and turn over the hybrid to the Colonists in the hope that they are spared the resulting takeover. Before this can be done, however, the Rebels kill all but a few members of the Syndicate in addition to Cassandra, the only living successful alien-human hybrid, before the Syndicate is able to send a signal to the Colonists. Without a successful hybrid, the timetable for the Colonist invasion will not be advanced and the date set for colonization remains December 22, 2012.
