Enzymatic recycling assays provide a complementary approach for total glutathione. In these methods, glutathione reductase reduces oxidized glutathione while a thiol-reactive reagent, such as 5,5'-dithiobis(2-nitrobenzoic acid), produces a colored product. The reaction cycles between reduced and oxidized forms, amplifying the signal. Spectrophotometric or fluorometric detection can then estimate concentration. Distinguishing reduced glutathione from glutathione disulfide often requires separate aliquots, masking agents, or chromatographic separation, and the choice affects reported values.
Storage conditions strongly influence glutathione stability. The solid reduced form is commonly kept desiccated at or below minus twenty degrees Celsius, protected from light and moisture. Aqueous solutions are less stable because the thiol group reacts with dissolved oxygen, and oxidation accelerates at neutral or alkaline pH. Acidic solutions and oxygen-free handling can slow degradation, but repeated freeze-thaw cycles should be avoided. Researchers often verify concentration before use, because apparent losses can arise from oxidation or water uptake.
Measuring glutathione in biological samples requires attention to oxidation and matrix effects. High-performance liquid chromatography with ultraviolet or fluorescence detection can separate reduced and oxidized forms after derivatization. Liquid chromatography with tandem mass spectrometry offers higher specificity and can quantify glutathione alongside related thiols. Because glutathione can oxidize during sample handling, many protocols use rapid acidification with metaphosphoric acid or sulfosalicylic acid. Internal standards help correct for losses during extraction and analysis.
Glutathione is a small sulfur-containing peptide built from glutamic acid, cysteine, and glycine. Its distinctive feature is a gamma-glutamyl bond between glutamate's side-chain carboxyl group and cysteine's amino group. This linkage resists ordinary peptidases and helps the molecule remain stable inside cells. The reduced thiol form, often abbreviated GSH, is the dominant intracellular species. The oxidized disulfide dimer, GSSG, forms when two reduced molecules link through their cysteine sulfur atoms. The balance between these forms is a common redox indicator.
In living systems, glutathione occurs in millimolar concentrations in many cell types, while extracellular levels are generally much lower. The liver holds a substantial share of the body's total pool, and the molecule participates in reduction, detoxification, and amino acid transport. It also serves as a cofactor for enzymes such as glutathione peroxidase and glutathione S-transferase. Because the cysteine residue supplies a reactive thiol, glutathione can donate electrons and become oxidized. Cells regenerate reduced glutathione through glutathione reductase using NADPH.

=== Disclosure of the identity of BasedBeffJezos === Forbes disclosed in December 2023 that the @BasedBeffJezos persona is maintained by Guillaume Verdon, a Canadian former Google quantum computing engineer and theoretical physicist. The revelation was supported by a voice analysis conducted by the National Center for Media Forensics of the University of Colorado Denver, which further confirmed the match between Jezos and Verdon. The magazine justified its decision to disclose Verdon's identity on the grounds of it being "in the public interest". On 29 December 2023 Guillaume Verdon was interviewed by Lex Fridman on the Lex Fridman Podcast and introduced as the "creator of the effective accelerationism movement".
The electoral process for the president was also changed, from being directly elected by the Togolese people to being indirectly elected by the Parliament. Opposition members criticised these changes due to the lack of term limits for Gnassingbé's new position. The changes came into effect in May 2025, when Gnassingbé was sworn in as president of the Council of Ministers, with former opposition leader Jean-Lucien Savi de Tové becoming president. Since June 2025, protests against Gnassingbé grew demanding his resignation. Gnassingbé has been widely criticized for contributing to democratic backsliding in Togo and critics have described him as a dictator.

=== Chemical intermediate === Glycerol is used to produce a variety of useful derivatives. Nitration gives nitroglycerin, an essential ingredient of various explosives such as dynamite, gelignite, and propellants like cordite. Nitroglycerin under the name glyceryl trinitrate (GTN) is commonly used to relieve angina pectoris, taken in the form of sublingual tablets, patches, or as an aerosol spray. Trifunctional polyether polyols are produced from glycerol and propylene oxide. Oxidation of glycerol affords mesoxalic acid. Dehydrating glycerol affords hydroxyacetone. Chlorination of glycerol gives the 1-chloropropane-2,3-diol:
Colin Campbell Norris (born 12 February 1976) is a British serial killer who was convicted of the murder of four elderly patients and the attempted murders of two others in two hospitals in Leeds, England, in 2002. A police investigation showed Norris to be on duty when five patients fell into sudden hypoglycaemic comas. Suspicions were raised when Norris predicted that healthy Ethel Hall would die at 5:15 am one morning, which is when she went into cardiac arrest, and tests revealed that she had been injected with an extremely high level of man-made insulin. Insulin was missing from the hospital fridge and Norris had last accessed it, only half an hour before Hall fell unconscious. Subsequent investigations would find that the unnatural hypoglycaemic attacks followed him when he was transferred to a second hospital, and hospital records revealed that only he could not be eliminated as a suspect. Detectives believed that Norris was responsible for up to six other suspicious deaths where only he was always present, but a lack of post mortem evidence and other factors meant that investigators and the Crown Prosecution Service could not pursue convictions for these deaths. Doubts were later raised about his conviction by, among others, Vincent Marks, an expert on insulin poisoning, who concluded from his own studies that there was a 1 in 10 chance that each patient's arrest could have happened naturally.
A large number of important drugs exert their effects by interacting with norepinephrine systems in the brain or body. Their uses include treatment of cardiovascular problems, shock, and a variety of psychiatric conditions. These drugs are divided into: sympathomimetic drugs which mimic or enhance at least some of the effects of norepinephrine released by the sympathetic nervous system; sympatholytic drugs, in contrast, block at least some of the effects. Both of these are large groups with diverse uses, depending on exactly which effects are enhanced or blocked. Norepinephrine itself is classified as a sympathomimetic drug: its effects when given by intravenous injection of increasing heart rate and force and constricting blood vessels make it very useful for treating medical emergencies that involve critically low blood pressure. Surviving Sepsis Campaign recommended norepinephrine as first line agent in treating septic shock which is unresponsive to fluid resuscitation, supplemented by vasopressin and epinephrine. Dopamine usage is restricted only to highly selected patients.
=== In sport === It is a common practice for professional footballers (soccer players) and road cyclists to remove leg hair for a number of reasons. In the case of a crash or tackle, the absence of the leg hair means the injuries (usually road rash or scarring) can be cleaned up more efficiently, and treatment is not impeded. Professional cyclists, as well as professional footballers, also receive regular leg massages, and the absence of hair reduces the friction and increases their comfort and effectiveness. Football players are also required to wear shin guards, and in case of a skin rash, the affected area can be treated more efficiently. It is also common for competitive swimmers to shave the hair off their legs, arms, and torsos (and even their whole bodies from the neckline down), to reduce drag and provide a heightened "feel" for the water by removing the exterior layer of skin along with the body hair.

Chromatographic methods can separate the two forms before detection. Enzymatic assays often measure total glutathione first and then use a separate procedure to estimate the oxidized fraction. The difference between total and oxidized amounts provides an indirect estimate of the reduced form.
Acidification lowers pH and slows thiol oxidation during handling. It also helps precipitate proteins that could interfere with detection. Typical choices include metaphosphoric acid and sulfosalicylic acid.
Dissolved oxygen reacts with the thiol group, forming glutathione disulfide. Neutral and alkaline conditions generally increase the oxidation rate. Light, metal ions, and repeated freezing and thawing can also reduce stability.
It is a tripeptide rather than a full protein. Proteins generally contain many amino acids joined by alpha-peptide bonds, while glutathione has three residues and an unusual gamma-glutamyl linkage. That structure affects how enzymes recognize and break it down.
